What We Do
We are specialists in narrative games.
The Brunette Games team is passionate about story, and we love our stories best when they are interactive, when the person experiencing the story is not doing so passively but actively, interactively, as part of the story. A player is different from a reader. Players can shape their own characters and make decisions that affect how the story goes—and how it ends. Players want to solve problems, complete challenges. They want to win.
We are wordsmiths with a nerdy bent for logic, poets with pocket protectors, storytellers who know better than to let text get in the way of the game. We play a lot of games and read a lot of books. We also read a lot of games and play some books. We’re a rare breed in this industry and in the world, and that’s part of why we’re in demand and growing. The other reason is because we’re very good at what we do—some say the best.
We have design and writing expertise in the following genres:
- Interactive and visual novels
- Chat fiction
- Choose-your-own-adventure stories
- Hidden-object puzzle adventures
- Narrative Match-3 builders and puzzlers
- Narrative resource management
- Hybrids of any of the above
- Retail and party games
While our current focus is on mobile games, we also have experience on console and PC titles.
We are a limited liability company registered in the U.S. and in the state of Missouri, with full professional liability insurance.
Head Writer/Designer and CEO Lisa Brunette has credits in hundreds of games played by worldwide audiences in the millions. Her 25 years’ experience includes more than a decade designing games and game narratives and fifteen years as a published author prior to that. Sender Unknown: The Woods, a game she designed for Daily Magic Productions, was nominated for an International Mobile Gaming Award, and Gamezebo called it the “next leap forward” in mobile. Brunette’s games have been featured in the App Store and on Google Play and consistently rank in the top 10 in multiple categories. She was visiting professor of games and game design at Webster University for the 2017-18 school year and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences as well as schools, non-profits, and libraries. All three books in her bestselling Dreamslippers Series have won indieBRAG medallions, and the second book was a finalist for the Nancy Pearl Book Award and nominated for a RONE Award. Additionally, she has a long list of bylines as a journalist, her work appearing in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Seattle Woman, Poets & Writers, and elsewhere. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from University of Miami, where she was a Michener Fellow.

“The storylines we ordered were always done on time and to a high quality. Even if we needed to make changes we hadn’t discussed earlier - they were made on time and with minimum iterations. We have worked together on the 'Survivors: The Quest' project since Jan 2017 and continue to do so. Our audience has reacted to the new texts very well - high-quality story and high-quality grammar and style. I would recommend working with Lisa [Brunette] if you need a good story and a professional writer.”
- Alexander Zhezher, General Producer, G5 Entertainment AB
“Lisa’s ability to be highly creative and reactive in a fast-moving game space is legendary. She pushes the envelope in the areas of immersion and multi-platform narrative design. She's got a great creative mind and knows how to manage the workload in a high-velocity production pipeline. Any creative team would be blessed to have her on their side.”
- Wade McMann, Senior Game Producer/Publisher, Cartoon Network Digital
“Lisa came highly recommended for her skills as a casual games writer. We worked closely with Lisa to shape the story for Matchington Mansion. She was excellent to work with, very professional and knowledgeable. We highly recommend Lisa Brunette as a narrative designer and game writer. She is clearly one of the best in her field!”
- Anonymous Producer, Firecraft Studios
“Lisa’s talent, prior experience, strong work ethic, smarts, and natural enthusiasm made for a highly valued asset for our studio. Her contributions were many, and she added to the professionalism and overall environment of the studio. It was great to have her on board, as she made a number of developers' and managers' jobs easier. I unequivocally endorse Lisa Brunette, and would welcome the opportunity to work with her once again.”
- Mike Mathisen, Director of Studio Operations, Cat Daddy Games/Take-2 Interactive
“Lisa is a passionate writer and a professional of the highest degree. On our work together, we value her highly-organized and self-driven work ethic. Any task we give to Lisa, we know we can expect on time. We also trust Lisa on any kind of creative vision for our games, because of her experience and general ability to come up with good stories and game features. I highly recommend working with Lisa if your game needs a professional touch of narrative design. I look forward to working with her on future projects.”
- Marianna Shilina Vallejo, CEO, Daily Magic Productions
“Lisa was instrumental in evolving the entire Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure ("HOPA") genre within the digital games space. Her ability to study and learn from several source subjects to create a set of guidelines for the written word helped bring narrative within these games to a higher level. As a result, sales of these products and overall satisfaction of game narratives were noticeably increased and, as a result, Lisa was recognized as the subject matter expert within the industry. When Lisa moved on to pursue her other passion, a noticeable hole was left within the company and the HOPA game releases.”
- Isaias Vallejo, Wizard at Daily Magic Games (former Executive Producer, Big Fish Games)
“On Shadowrun: Hong Kong, in addition to editing, Elisa [Mader] contributed dialogue for a set of side characters in the game. In this effort she was also able to spin-up quickly to create two short story arcs that fit in the world of Shadowrun and matched the quality and tone of our writing - which, especially for as prose-driven a game as Shadowrun, is no small feat!”
- Mike McCain, Game Director/Art Director, Harebrained Schemes
“Elisa has been fantastic both as a writer and as an Associate Editor. She is easy to work with and consistently makes great suggestions for the site. She is prompt and does a great job of communicating the status of any project she is working on. Moreover, she is a delight to edit. Her writing rarely needs changes and she always make interesting observations. I would recommend her to anyone as a writer or as an editor.”
- Dan Spritz, Senior Scientific Copy Editor, Foundation Medicine
“[Elisa] has a knack for adapting her skills to edit a wide range of copy, whether it's flavorful descriptive text, fiction, or complicated and nuanced game rules.”
- Christopher Paul Carey, Senior Editor, Paizo, Inc.
We begin with a conversation in person or over Skype about your current needs and objectives. This gives us the opportunity to meet face-to-face, get to know one another, and discuss a potential working relationship.
Step Two: Proposal and Cost Estimate
Next, you provide a Non-Disclosure Agreement for Lisa Brunette to sign, if needed. Then you can securely share documents with us, such as a concept proposal or pitch deck, templates, concept art, prototypes, flow charts, etc. These will give us a solid understanding of your project, and we can create a proposal with a timeline and cost estimate for completion.
Step Three: The Work
Once we’ve agreed to terms and signed contracts and work orders, our design and writing for you begin. We will bill on a work-order or project basis once the deliverable is accepted, and most clients opt to send payment by wire transfer.
